Negotiations have resulted in agreement being reached between the Union and Department for the insertion of two new sub-clauses into the Retained Award (6.6.1.3a and 6.8a) to cover members working at Sydney’s annual Royal Easter Show, including significant increases in the rates of pay. The next 4% pay rise for permanent members took effect on Friday 2 March and will appear in retained members’ pays this month. This is the final increase payable under the current award before it expires in March 2008, and negotiations for the next award will commence shortly.  [Read more]

As part of the negotiations surrounding the Union’s Country Staffing Proposal, the Department wrote, in the following terms, to the Union on 4 September 1998:

“The department recognises the unique circumstances surrounding the provision of specialist bush fire appliance and crews in the GSA and proposes to replace the existing pumpers at 48 Mortdale, 66 Rhodes, 72 Merrylands and 79 Ingleburn with new type 1 pumpers. These vehicles will enable the NSW Fire Brigades to provide a multi-function role from these strategic locations. [Read more]

November 10, 1997

The Department is presently refusing to allow an injured retained firefighter back to work – despite a full-recovery of his workers’ compensation injury. The reason? It is alleged that the particular member is “unfit” for firefighting. The Department is telling the member that despite his recovery from the workers’ comp. injury, he will be placed on sick-leave until his “fitness” improves. After his sick-leave expires, all that will be left is social security. [Read more]

August 14, 1997

On 18 August 1997 the Manager Operational Personnel released a memorandum to all NSWFB staff regarding entitlements for staff in attendance at the Thredbo Snowfields incident. The memorandum simply stated that “the provisions of the respective awards apply”, but did not specify how these entitlements applied. [Read more]

Following near-unanimous endorsement of the Award proposal dated 17 April 1997, by members of the Retained Sub-Branch, the NSW Industrial Relations Commission ratified a new Award for Retained Firefighters on Friday 2 May 1997. The new Award, known as the CROWN EMPLOYEES (NSW FIRE BRIGADES RETAINED FIREFIGHTING STAFF) AWARD 1997, delivers significant benefits for retained firefighters. [Read more]
