Christmas day recalls

December 22, 2005

The Department has approached the Union about problems in getting sufficient numbers of members making themselves available for recall on Christmas Day. The most pressing problem appears to be covering expected shortages of Station Officers on that day. Should Station Officer shortages occur due to insufficient members being available for recall, the Union has agreed to the acting up of on shift Leading Firefighters in the first instance. If insufficient numbers of on shift Leading Firefighters are available, then off duty Leading Firefighters should be recalled to act up into the position of Station Officer.

In the unlikely event that there are insufficient numbers of permanent members to cover permanent firefighter shortages, then retained firefighters are to be used and paid the ‘standby’ rate.

The Union is adamant that no stations are to be closed for any purposes and has agreed to these initiatives for that reason only. If any members on “D” platoon wish to make themselves available for recall on Christmas Day or other members wish to make themselves available during the Christmas / New Year period they should contact their Inspector and have their names added to the recall lists.
