Department attacks your Award

April 15, 2008

On Thursday April 10th the Department provided the Union with a document in response to our claim for wage parity with Australian Capital Territory firefighters. That document was amongst the most confrontational and inflammatory grabs at our wages and conditions since the Board of Fire Commissioners. The document was at the same time served on the NSW Industrial Relations Commission as a counter claim on our wages and conditions, served up for final arbitration by the courts.

The Unions State Committee of Management has now met and considered the Department’s attempt to remove conditions of employment held for decades in exchange the Department has offered just one half of one percent more than the NSW Government’s standard wage increase of 2.5% per year. This afternoon the Union’s State Committee of Management has resolved to call a meeting of station delegates for Tuesday April 22nd to bring all delegates up to speed on the Department’s proposal.
As such the State Committee has also resolved to call a Special General Meeting of members for 10am Monday 28th April 2008 at the Trades Hall 377 Sussex Street Sydney.
This meeting will be discussing the Department’s proposed changes to our Award and the strategy that the State Committee of Management will be recommending to press our claim for a just wage outcome. Details of the matters to be discussed and the timetable for Sub-Branch meetings will be circulated separately later this week.
All members are now encouraged to contact your respective station delegate and ensure that your brigade is either represented at the forthcoming station delegates meeting or that your local Union representative talks you through the Union’s analysis of the Department’s claim on our wages.

State Secretary
