Fix Our Fire Service: State of the Stations Audit

Firefighters, FBEU members, constantly report concerns about the state of our stations.

The FBEU is aware that stations across NSW are in varying states of disrepair and some, regardless of age, are just not up to scratch.

For almost a decade we’ve seen little investment in our existing stations. Fire and Rescue NSW has failed to secure significant capital from the NSW Government to invest in our stations and amenities – the things we need to get our job done safely.

It’s time for us to step up and get active and organised to fix our fire service.

In 2021, the FBEU is working with delegates and members across NSW to understand what’s broken and what needs fixing.

The first step of that work is the State of the Stations Audit. This audit will help us produce our Fix our Fire Service: State of the Stations Report.

This station audit looks to:

  1. Map the state of the stations in NSW
  2. Understand the most common issues in stations across NSW
  3. Understand the most pressing issues in stations in NSW

The Fix our Fire Service: State of the Stations Report will be used to:

  1. Assist members to address issues collectively in your station and across the State
  2. Demonstrate the issues we face to our employer
  3. Identify and address work health and safety concerns
  4. Educate the public about the impact of the neglect of our stations
  5. Lobby government for funding to fix our fire service

What do you need to do?

We need union delegates (or HSRs) in every station in NSW to complete the State of the Stations Audit.

We need ONE audit from each station. If you have more than one delegate or HSR at your station please work together to do ONE audit.

You can complete your audit here and you can download and look at the questions in advance here. We also ask you to upload a number of photos if possible.

If you don’t have a delegate please talk with your co-workers and make a plan to get a delegate and have one person complete the audit. Your organiser can also help with this. It’s important that with such a large project we have one go-to person. The audit is just the beginning.
