METRO RAIL RESPONSE – SAFE CREWING

Over the past few weeks, we have been talking to the Department about our concerns with the opening of the latest Metro line and the low number of stations and Firefighters trained in Metro response.

Our primary concern is that the low number of operational appliances means the weight of attack should there be an incident on a metro line is affected.

In light of these concerns raised by members, on Friday, we wrote to the Department asking that they implement a temporary uplift in the number of Metro qualified Firefighters who must be attached to every shift at every Metro station.

I am pleased to report that starting 0800 tomorrow, and lasting until the next group of Metro stations are online, the Department will be ensuring that all Metro Rail response stations have a minimum of 3 qualified Metro operators on each pumper for each shift.

I’d like to thank our Minister for stepping in with very short notice to help resolve the problem. Credit where credit is due.

In Unity,

Leighton Drury
State Secretary
