Union Elections – Your Chance to Have a Say

March 22, 2009

The Union’s triennial elections for its fourteen member State Committee of Management are set to open next week and it is vitally important that all members take their opportunity to vote. On this basis it is extremely important that members who have changed address notify the Union as soon as possible so the electoral roll can be altered and a postal ballot will arrive at your registered address.

This election will be a particularly important one given the current economic situation. With trade union membership down to just 18% of the workforce it is almost certain that employers (including Government) will be seeking to cut wages to drive down labour cost. Already in the UK and the US of A major employers are seeking to cut wages and reduce hours of work to supplement reduced profits.

Our Union has carved itself out a place as a well-organised militant organization willing to take on Government and stand its ground on important issues. This has been possible because the FBEU is a democratic and representative Union. Every elected official is either a serving firefighter or a firefighter on leave from the job. In order to maintain this advantage every member of the Union needs to consider running for office.

The Union’s State Committee of Management is the body that set the Union’s campaigning priorities develops a strategic approach to implementing them and works through the tactics and policies that it will use to win these campaigns. The State Committee of Management is the Unions most important body and is the conduit for members into and out of the Union.

I ask you all to give serious consideration to running for office.
