In a tragic reminder of the inherent dangers of firefighting, Retained Firefighter Phillip Viles of Budgewoi Brigade was killed in the course of firefighting operations at Doyalson on Monday, 26 July 2004. The officials and members of the Fire Brigade Employees’ Union have extended our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our fallen comrade, Phillip Viles. The Department’s recently introduced Bushfire Risk Information Management System – or “BRIMS” – has not yet been agreed to by the Union, and is therefore banned until further notice. There was certainly no agreement for BRIMS within the recently list of accepted initiatives under the new 2004 Awards.

Gosford Fire Station is currently undergoing redevelopment work. Not only did the Department fail to notify the Union that this work was to occur, contrary to its own Standing Order 2-215, but management now contends that the members at Gosford are not suffering unsatisfactory conditions during the construction work and shall therefore not be paid the appropriate and agreed allowance. “That the proposed 2004 Permanent and Retained Awards, as reported to and tabled at this meeting, be received, noted and endorsed, and that the State Secretary be authorised to now arrange for the making of those Awards by the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW.” Read more…
