The Retained Sub-Branch meeting held over last weekend to consider the Union’s draft Award application and authorise the State Secretary to seek an interim award concluded at 9am yesterday morning with near-unanimous support for the recommended motion (450 members in favour and only 3 against). Unfortunately, a further 22 votes supporting the motion could not be counted due to a lack of quorum of at least 7 members at each meeting.

Whilst this policy might on first blush seem a reasonable and responsible management initiative, the truth is that it has serious implications for retained members’ benefits under our Death and Disability Award. In August 2001 the Union issued a notice instructing Permanent members to check/maintain/wash only their station’s pumper or aerial pumper (as the case may be), and for the rostered driver for that shift to claim and be paid the (then) motor drive allowance. Similarly, Retained members were to check/maintain/wash any and all other appliances at the station, and to claim and be paid for all time spent doing so as per Standing Orders and clause 6.7.1 of the Retained Award.
