USE OF RELIEVERS

February 12, 1998

It is understood by the Union that their is some confusion in Zones N1 & N2 over the proper procedures with respect to the allocation of relief duties on the Central Coast.

It is both Union and Departmental policy (as reflected in In-Orders 1994/11) that where relief is required for the Central Coast, the following applies:

1)  the Inspector will request (as per Clause 12.5 of the Award)) all of the region’s available Relieving Firefighters to fill the vacancy.

2)  If Step 1) fails to fill the relief, the Inspector is to liase with the Inspector (State Fire Command) with regard to the availability of spare Relieving Firefighters from adjoining Regions.  If a spare Relieving Firefighter is available, then the Inspector (State Fire Command) will request (as per Clause 12.5 of the Award)) that the Relieving Firefighter fill the vacancy.

3)  If Steps 1 & 2) fail to fill the relief, the Inspector will request (as per Clause 12.5 of the Award)) firefighters in his region to fill the vacancy by way of an outduty.

4    If Steps 1 – 3) fail to fill the relief, the Inspector is to fill the vacancy with a firefighter from the recall roster.

Accordingly, effective today, all members are hereby instructed to follow the above procedures.  Any breaches of these procedures are to be reported to the Union Office so that the matter can be taken up with the Department.  This instruction remains in force until further notice.
